When
I was a kid, my dad used to read me fairy tales before going to bed.
I would not be content with just one story but I would always ask him
for a second story every night. And every night, my dad would say,
“The second story starts tomorrow. Time for bed.” I still miss my
dad.
My next move was to make
friends with the librarian in high school so that I would be the
first one to borrow brand new books before they were even released
in circulation. Because this was International School Manila, we had
a steady supply of new books from the States. I loved getting a new
borrower's card all the time because I borrowed so many books.
The
point is, reading has always been part of my life. But take note, you
don't have to be an English major to become a reader.
I always like to share this little anecdote with my students. When I spent a year in the States with my sister in Arizona, I finished reading 120 novels. How did I get this number? I counted all the books I borrowed from the printouts I got from the public library at the end of the year. That was my accomplishment for that year.
These days I don't have as much time to read but during the weekend, I can still finish two novels in one day if I skip my household chores. But get this, reading is not about speed. It's just that I have so many books to read that I am always in a bit of a rush to finish a book.
Last
weekend I started counting the books in the shelves of my bedroom but
gave up because there were too many, I finally finished counting my
books last night and I got a nice number – a thousand and one
books. The number changes all the time because I donate the ones I
have read to the APC library and I buy new and used books every
weekend at Power Books and Book Sale.
My book collection is a mix of academic and trade books. I have two sets of self help books. I have two dozen books on getting organized and getting rid of clutter. These books are now contributing to the clutter in my bedroom.
I also have quite a collection of surviving a breakup books like He's Just Not That Into You of which I got myself two copies.. Well, guess what, those books didn't help me forget my ex. Moving on...
Chic lit is a fun and easy read because it's a version of a woman's fairy tale. I love happy endings, even one with my ex who was here on vacation during our term break. Yup, I am still recovering...
But the bulk of my collection is mystery novels. I love reading a good mystery especially ones that you can't put down until 3 in the morning. I read in Inquirer that mystery novels are good for keeping the mind sharp so that's food for thought.
Let me just say that reading is good for your mind. You enhance your vocabulary and you improve your writing. You read good authors and learn from their writing styles and then you discover your own style. Did I tell you reading was fun? It is.
I always try to encourage my students to read. It's a tough sell with all the new technologies and games vying for their attention. But with e-books, there is a chance that reading will become more accessible to students.
Reading is my passion. As my favorite Geek t-shirt says, “The book was better.”
When I was a kid I find reading books, that are not required by the teachers, quite boring. I didn't have the chance to collect books unlike my sister. That's maybe the reason why English is the hardest subject for me. But Miss, we need to adopt for us to survive. What I mean is to survive school. So now, I've read less than 20 English not-required-by-teacher book and a lot more to go.
ReplyDelete"Shakespeare, Homer, Dante Alighieri, John Milton, Tennyson, and Dostoevsky"
ReplyDeleteFor a starter list? Wow! I guess I better start reading. :)

ReplyDeleteI agree, reading is good for your mind and it will be more helpful if you have interest in what you're reading or if the one you're reading is interesting.

I am a type of person who's not really fond of reading books. In fact, I haven't even finished a book before. I always stop half though, but this inspired me to start reading and start finishing a book. A thousand and one books is just amazing!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to read novels. Unfortunately, my parents and all the other people around me weren't. So I only got to read a few as I didn't really have much knowledge about what books are considered great. Nor did any of my friends so I don't really get any recommendations from other people. Now that I'm in college though and can save up money and have new friends who are interested in reading. I may actually buy more novels and read in my spare time.
ReplyDeletewhen i was in grade school i used to read a lot of books because my friend encouraged me, and for me it was very fun to read because you would be able to learn and enhance your vocabulary. i hope i would be able to read more books because it is very inspiring to know that you have read more than a thousand books.
ReplyDeleteI don’t usually read books, especially novels. Because I always might fell asleep when I just open the first page of the book, and I easily get bored. I don’t usually use my imaginations, instead I often memorized it, especially if it is required, like for example, book reports. I only like books with pictures and only when the famous novel books have movies. Because I am the type of person who’s also not fond in reading books, even though my sister has lots of books that she try to lend me and tell me to read it when I have a spare time, I still wouldn’t. But this story inspires me to start borrowing from my sister and start reading it, to enhance my imaginations to express my own thoughts and to inspire myself to read hundreds of books in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad usually share bedtime stories before I go to sleep. I remember those days when I was a kid. When I was five years old, I started writing but, I've never usually a fan of reading books, so that's why I'm always incorrect with my spelling when we're having an activity. I have a lot of friends who always write stories so, that's the reason why I pursue to become a writer but, now I had finally stopped from writing. Probably, I have no time to update all my stories also, because of the readers, they might criticize me as a writer. I'm a Bibliophile. I really love to collect books and read them all, I think I will finish them all by one or two months? One of my inspiration authors is, John Green because, he inspires me to write again. Reading is fun! It helps me to enhance my vocabulary and also, to widen my imaginations too.
ReplyDeleteWe can learn a lot by reading and it can also help us enhance our English skills. I read fiction and inspirational books. When I read I always have a dictionary beside because there are some words I don't know the meaning. I have a few collection of books since I read through e-books.
ReplyDelete-aly
Actually I don't really read books, I have this habit that if I cannot finish the book I was reading I immediately turn the page to the end of the story. But after I read this, it encourages me to read not only one book but a thousands of books.
ReplyDeleteI love to read books. You can call me, a bookworm, a bibliophile, a bookish keeper, because that's what I really am. I've always loved books. I have this goal in mind which is to finish 50 books until December. I guess that's a big accomplishment for me. I've already read 15 books this year starting last June. I also have this habit of writing my To Be Read books in a small notebook where I'll buy them when it's on sale. e.g Manila International Book Fair. Though I didn't go to the fair last September. Maybe next time. Right now, I'm preparing for the Christmas book sale in fullybooked, powerbooks and national bookstore. Hoping to buy tons of book before this year ends.
ReplyDeleteI get that feeling too Miss Elize! The feeling of reading in a hurry because you're too excited to catch what was the next thing that would happen in the next page and yes Miss Elize, I agree, it is always that "the books are better"
ReplyDeleteThank you Miss Elize, you inspire me. I didn't actually take a chance to open a Shakespeare book, because i knew those words written on it were hard to understand.... But you, ah! you're brilliant and very enthusiastic Miss. I'll take a chance soon?
Your blog is seriously inspiring me to read novels and books again Miss Elize. In high school I have red Anne Frank's "The Diary of a Young Girl" and "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Both book is a requirement for our English class and I never thought I'd be loving the story.
ReplyDeleteI am not really fond of reading novels but hey thanks miss! You've convinced me by the blog you've posted and it seems like interesting to me already. I should give it a try reading more and it will help me to learn and improve.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had already known the wondrous world of books when I was in grade school. But that's not a big deal anymore because now, I am enlightened with the fascinating stories of every novel I read. I have opened my eyes to a world I never imagine I could enter.
ReplyDeletePS. I'm jealous miss because you now have your library with lots of books you've read. Haha
The first time I read a mystery novel I can't help but get hooked and indulge myself deeper into the story. I really love the thrills and the dialogues between the characters. My favorite mystery novel would be Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Due to my addiction of reading mystery novels my bestfriends often calls me detective due to my enigmatic nature sometimes. But reading this blog really inspires me to read more and learn more. And all I can say is that thank you Miss Elize for inspiring me again to read more mystery novels.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! This blog post is such an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteEver since I was surrounded by my friends who read books and getting too emotional because of its endings, I did not waste an opportunity to borrow a book and try to make reading a new hobby of mine. John Green's "Paper Towns" is the first ever book that I finished in just a short time and I think if you really put yourself into each characters of the story, you will really want to finish reading the book already. After that, I started borrowing books from my friends. But now, I am really saving up to buy a new good book to read once in awhile because it is really such a good investment. It is true that reading can let you learn and improve.
Hey Ms. Eliz!
ReplyDeleteDid you know, in my family, I'm the only one who collects and read books? Quite funny right? I discovered the nature of reading books when I was second year. I started reading "Jacks of Raven." Its a very good novel, but paced out in the book stores. Then I started collecting and reading Bob Ong's (for fun), Mitch Albom's (for inspiration), fiction, and the collection of my grandfather's books. (related to crime and mystery, and it's from the province too!)
After discovering the nature of reading books, my dad told me to get Accountancy and Law. I agreed. Besides, accountancy is in demand today, and I am curious and intrigued in the nature of law.
Spread the Geekness!
Wow Miss Eliz! I thought I've read a lot of books by now but after reading this post, it makes me have a second thought about it. Hahaha. I am now wondering how many books, all in all, you have read already. And a thousand and one books in your room? That's a LOT of books and a really BIG room. Hahaha. Keep on inspiring Miss. You inspired me a lot after reading this blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Miss Eliz! Ever since elementary I am obsessed with books. I read almost every type of book, whether it's a New York Times bestseller or just a second-hand book from Book Sale. I used to finish a novel within a day, but nowadays I'm not reading so much as before. But this post inspired me to read more. If having a hundred books was my achieved accomplishment, then having a thousand would be my next goal.
ReplyDelete"I have gone to places I have never been. I have lived a thousand lives and I've loved a thousand loves. I've walked on distant worlds and seen the end of time. Because I read." - George R. R. Martin
This quote alone can explain why I read books. Through books you can enter a completely different world from ours, and it is a wonderful experience.
Keep on inspiring!
Grand. I’m also into (very) mystery novels ( John Connolly’s, Dan Brown’s) and i must say these books are really thought-provoking and enlightening. Yes, I’m also having that “rush”, i want to get to the finale and unravel the mysteries as quick as possible to satisfy my curiosity yet i don’t want to overlook a single word.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Wow miss i envy you :( mind sharing some of your books? hahaha lol
Wow miss Eliz. your blog really inspired me to read books since I'm not really fond of books. but know I think I understand the purpose of reading books
ReplyDeleteSo thank you miss Eliz for Inspiring all of us

Interesting! Two thumbs up for you Miss Eliz. :D
ReplyDeleteHi miss Eliz! This blog post of yours really inspired me to read books. Ever since, I am not fond of reading books, because I thought that it sometimes gets boring and I don't have much time for that sort of stuff. But, I was thinking of starting to read books because it would definitely benefit me! Thank you miss for this inspiring post.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a kind of person who loves to read, but because of this blog. It inspired me to read books, just like some people did I don't finish reading book. I turned the page to an ending/conclusion. But this blog, is a big help it inspired be not read books!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Just wow..... I can't believe you've read a thousand and one books Ms. Eliz. Nonetheless, I admire you because you can spare some time just to read a book and finish in just a matter of hour. Such an inspiring post indeed. Now I'm more inspired to read and collect a lot of books especially mystery with action novels and widen my imaginations as well as my vocabulary :)
ReplyDeleteReading this blog entry makes me wanna read books again! I also love reading books before, specially John Green's books. I even go to sleep late because I can't stop reading, every page that I read makes me excited to read the next one but I stopped reading books when I became a senior student because I was pretty busy with our thesis research and investigatory projects.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! That was amazing! Finishing 120 novels is a huge accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteWoooooow! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz ! Now That i have read your blogs , im so amaze ! :) and now I'm more inspired to read novels and widen my imaginations as well as my vocabulary :)
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! After reading this blog, it makes me wanna read books now. I dont really love reading books but after I read this, it inspires me to read books.
ReplyDeleteAMAZING! That's what I can say with what I've read in your blog. I'm not fond of reading books but I'm inspired by what you share in this blog. Reading is like taking a journey cause it takes a lot of chapters. For you, Ms. Eliz, all I can say is that you really have a good journey. Hope that your Journey towards God through reading will give you an everlasting friendship with God. Hope that you'll be sharing the books you've read not just to us your students but also to God. God bless you. :)
ReplyDeleteReading books have always been a part of me. Though I haven't had the time to do so, I still apply what I learned from the books I've read in my life. It gives me high hopes as well especially the non-fictions one. It has also helped me widen my vocubalary. This post is so interesting, hope you could lend me one of your books when I get the time to read! God bless.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! Thank you for sharing this entry. It made me feel to continue my passion in reading. I remembered back in high school, Scholastic Corporation partnered with our school to encourage students to read more books and enhance their skills through reading. Each student is assigned to read at least 40 books throughout the school year. For me, having to read that number of books made me appreciate reading more. Other than the learning itself, I realized that I could also get inspirations from books, which I can use in effective brainstorming and critical thinking.
ReplyDeletePS. Wow Miss! What a large amount of books you’re having! I wished I could have enough time to read books even if college life stresses everything out of me. :(
I don't usually read books because I tend to get bored quickly. My brother and my friends are trying to make me read books, they even give me books to read but I just leave it in our shelf. I don't know why they love to read books but after I read your blog (you reading over a thousand books), I'm curious on why people actually love to read. So I might actually try to read books from now on for me to see what they really like about reading.
ReplyDelete120 books in a year? WOW that's really great Ms. Eliz.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into reading, I've read a few books but i didn't get the chance to finish it til the last page. It took me a month and a half to completely finish the first novel I've ever read. Thank you for posting this Ms. Eliz, i think i might start looking for good books again.
Haha! This post reminds me of my mother's usual side story about me whenever she scolds me for using my gadgets too much. She claims that I read children's books in National Bookstore (NBS) at Festival Mall where there is a spot there for children to sit on the CARPETED floor and read. She also says that I always finish reading my textbooks the night before I go to school back in preparatory level. I couldn't believe that I, as how am I now, was a reader when I was a wee child despite remembering bits of scenes where I read books at NBS.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up and listening to the advice of my dad about how reading is very important, I'm sure he would have used you as an example. I always wished I could be as passionate about books, but the truth in the matter is that, if a book doesn't interest me then I tend to fall asleep easily. It takes a lot for a book to interest me. That is the reason I like reading memoirs or historical biographies in which it entails a tragic or graphic story-line.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a lot of passion on reading books Ms. Eliz. I wonder how it feels to have a knowledge like yours. I usually hate reading books but after reading this I realized that books really have benefits. I might try reading books from now on. I'd like to start reading motivational books from now on.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great job Miss Eliz.
ReplyDeleteI was impressed Miss Eliz on how you love your books so much. I enjoyed reading your blog because i love books as well. I hope your passion in reading books will help you a lot in the future.
ReplyDeleteOk That's good, That's good Miss Eliz, Our firend.
ReplyDeleteI love this entry of yours, miss. After I read this blog, it made me reminisce when/how I started to love books. It also inspire me MORE to read books and collect them. You are indeed a BOOKaholic. A thousand and one books, Omy really wish I could also collect tons of books. :) Keep on reading and inspiring other people.
ReplyDeleteMa'am, this is Benjamin Bajet, your bm151 student. My google acc is acting up again so this is the onky way i can comment. Pardon me haha.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a bookaholic when i was in elementary. I loved the classics like Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Then i started to read japanese books by famous martial artists and warriors like Miyamoto Musashi and Morihei Ueshiba since i was studying various martial arts, i wanted to understand The Way. Then I became interested in all things military so I began with Tom Clancy and and worked my way up to Ken Follet. :)
Good evening Ma'am, this Rafael Monzon from BM151. This made me realize that reading is important in our daily lives. Thank you Ma'am :)
ReplyDeleteI once finished a book (Everyday by David Levithan) reading a book is quite exciting especially when you're alone, you can imagine what you're reading in way you are dreaming, a perfect way to end the day! :)
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Ms. your blog is inspiring :)
ReplyDeleteHi Miss ! Thank you for always inspiring us to read books over and over again :)
ReplyDeleteBefore, I'd really like to have books, but once i have and started reading it, it made me felt quite boring. But then, i used to loved books finally when i was in high school maybe because I've been surrounded by people specifically my friends who is also a BOOKaholic :D and I find it interesting and became a spare time habit :)
Good thing, i have a collection of books right now and I'm proud to say that I'd finished it all. hahahahaha.
I admire Miss eliz my profersor in EEP,for she is a bookaholic. She has a strong passion for and desire to read lots of book, and because of that i got inspired and i wanted to start reading books...
ReplyDeleteActually I don't really read books. But when I read your blog it inspired me to read a book
ReplyDeleteI don't usually read books but when I read your blog Miss it feels like its nice to read and read books
ReplyDeleteGood evening :)
ReplyDeleteWow I am really amazed by the number of books you owned, miss. It's the first time I met someone like you. After reading this blog post I was motivated to read some books. I think I'll start by reading the required novel you assigned to us. I hope you keep on motivating your students to read. You are a great professor indeed.
I have to admit that I am having a hard time reading books. For the reason that, I can't stand reading a book for more than an hour. in addition to that, if the book I'm reading is as thick as a brick literally, I get bored. Even so, your blog inspired me. Your blog taught me something that books are more than just books. Books can be deceiving at the same time it could be our best friend. Books can take you anywhere, it can somehow, take you to places you've never been to. As for me, when I read your blog, I felt the excitement of yours to express the importance of reading books. I look back on how my old man taught how to read when I was 3 years old, those were the old days. I often miss the old days with my old man. I also noticed how you were so in loved with your ex that up to now you're still in the process of moving on... Well, moving on is really a tough thing to do. Above all, I guess you're the one who loved the most and now, you're the one who's hurt the most. It seemed impossible that someone could endure such pain. Back to the ball game, for me, reading blogs are like reading books seeing that the blogger is also the author of his/her own blogs. I would like to commend you on your great works, Ms. Eliz :) thank you for inspiring us, your students. I would love to read more of your works. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! You really inspire me miss to read more books. It's really amazing that you've read a lot of books. I hope I can also read all the books that I want :)
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! Wow you are reaaly really awesome. Im not fond of reading but after reading this post i realized how relevant and important books are. Guess what, reading books is now on the list of my hobbies haha . thank you very much for inspiring us and for letting us know that books are amazing stuffs.
ReplyDeleteI once was a steady reader. I do not know why I stopped being a book reader and this posting really inspiring me to read books again. People says books are food for the mind. Yes indeed. I should restart feedimg my mind again. Thank you for sharing your good story ma'am.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Elize! Thanks for sharing this, you really are very passionate in terms of reading books. I've already read some books but the number of the book you have read is just awesome. I wish that I can put reading to my hobbies. Thanks Ms. Elize for this!
ReplyDeleteGood Evening Miss!
ReplyDeleteActually, I'm not the type of person who's into books. Yes, I do have books at home but I wasn't able to finish it because I easily get bored. But now, I think I'll be able to do so, because you inspired and amazed me at the same time. I never thought there are still people here on earth, like you. 1001 books? I can't imagine it. Thanks for inspiring us. :)
Good morning miss! Woaaaa! Amazing! You read 1001 books? I can't imagine because your time focus more on reading. So differ for me because I'm not a bibliophile. I read e-books but more on surfing the worldwide web. Absolutely, this blog really capture mind to read novels. To be honest, I read books when the movie Is about to come. Especially when my favorite artist is there on movie. But miss, A massive massive thank you for inspiring us to read books. Yes, "read more, learn more!" All the love x. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of books Ms. Eliz! I am so amazed knowing that you can finish reading 2 novels in a day. Well, It takes a lot of months for me to finish reading a novel and it sucks. I really found this blog interesting. I'm not really into books but after reading this, I might try reading books again. Thank you miss Eliz!
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! I am a bookaholic myself and is trying to build my own collection of books. I love reading so much, that a book and unlimited coffee would mean heaven for a day for me. Since I'm still a student, my budget for books is as thin as I am, so to support my love for reading, I would borrow books from my friends, sometimes we would trade books that is why I have read a lot of books though my collection is only but a baby collection. But these days, I'm not able to read as much as I want to. School works are tearing me and my love of reading apart. Thank you so much for inspiring me to start my own collection of books, 1001 books is no joke, you surely are one voracious reader. More power to you miss, may you continue inspiring and influencing other people to read more. God bless.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! Wow ! Just wow. I am imagining to have a lots of books in my bedroom but luckily i don't have. When i was a kid I love to read books also like Fairytales because I love the stories with a happy ending. And I was shock with the books of 1001 and more. Nice !
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! I'm not a book lover. i don't usually read book, but your blog inspired me to read books. Wow :)
ReplyDeleteHi Ms.Eliz im not a fan of reading books because it seems boring, but after i read your blog maybe i can try to read some books so i can learn many things. :) - alo
ReplyDeleteWow. It's really amazing :)
ReplyDeleteWow. It's really amazing :)
ReplyDeletei find reading very interesting because of this blog ;)
ReplyDeleteI love reading that's why vacations are something I look forward to. Reading is what takes up most of my time during vacations.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! Thank you for posting this. Totally worth the read and I love how students are responding to this post. Like you, I also find reading fun. It’s good how a person can be exposed to a lot of wisdom from reading books (of course depending on the books they choose). I always wanted to have a house overflowing with books and you're such a good role model to all the students. Keep inspiring more people to read books and God bless.
ReplyDeleteWow my friend's a bookworm too! She used to have a collection of different novels but unfortunately she sold it 'cause she needed money. Actually right now she's regreting it haha!
ReplyDeleteIt's satisfying to see how other bookaholics feel. Because just like you Ms. Eliz, I'm a book worm myself. I love reading so much that I actually made a blog about it. Reading is the perfect hobby, whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. But sadly, not everyone reads because they are so lazy to pick up a book or even search for an article online.
ReplyDeleteI hope other people can also see the beauty of reading.
Hi Ms. Eliz! I made a new blog and it is tannikeyedda.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! I'm so amaze that you really love to read books. I wish that I have that good habits too. :(
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Eliz! I'm so amaze that you really love to read books. I wish that I have that good habits too. :(
ReplyDeleteMs. Elize you remind me of my dad. He also loves reading books. In fact, most of the books in our bookshelves are his (Not more than what you have though... A thousand one books is hard to beat). While my dad can read books in just one sitting, I on the other hand take weeks or even months. I used to wonder why some people like my dad, love reading books. In my opinion, movie and plays are much better because you don't have to imagine scenarios. It's already right there in front of your eyes. However, reading your blog post allowed me to see things in the perspective of a book lover. I now understand the feelings of a book lover get whenever he/she gets his/her hands on a book. I now understand the satisfaction they get when they finished reading a book and the excitement they get when they move on to another one. And for that, I thank you Ms. Elize for creating this post entry. Thank you for allowing me to gain a new perspective.
ReplyDeleteMy dad loves reading books too like me. But when I discovered wattpad, I started to read there and I noticed that I started not to spend more money in buying books. When I read this, I started to miss reading books 😔. I like the way you love books Ms. Eliz.
ReplyDeleteYou're passion for books and reading is really inspiring Ma'am! The blog was a good read.. It made me know a little bit more of your personality.. More power to you!
ReplyDeleteMy mom reads me every night when I was in elementary level. but when I grew up I feel boring when reading on books, but their was a new technology / gadget that you can read in wattpad. I like the way you read books.
